Born Before the Country It Now Broadcasts For

This station's history predates Pakistan itself. It began in 1937 as the Lahore station of All India Radio, broadcasting from Sir Fazle Hussain's house near Simla Pahari, according to accounts gathered by the Academy of the Punjab in North America. For a decade it served as a genuine cultural meeting point for Punjab's Muslim, Hindu and Sikh communities, broadcasting in both Punjabi and Urdu to a region defined by that shared identity. Everything changed on August 14, 1947, Pakistan's Independence Day, when the station was converted overnight into Radio Pakistan Lahore, becoming a voice of the newly formed government the very next day.

The Station That Launched Noor Jehan and Rafi

Few radio stations anywhere can claim to have helped build the careers of two of South Asia's most celebrated singers. Radio Pakistan Lahore gave early exposure to Noor Jehan and Mohammed Rafi, voices that went on to define Pakistani and Indian film music for decades. The station's central production unit, tucked behind its own canteen, became the recording home for classical, semi-classical and Punjabi folk music in the years after Partition, a period when radio carried weight as one of the few stable cultural institutions in a newly divided region.

Where Ghazal Found a Dedicated Home

The station also shaped the modern ghazal tradition directly. Poet Nasir Kazmi joined Radio Pakistan as a staff artist and wrote Aiwaan-e-Ghazal, a program still remembered as one of the defining showcases for the genre on Pakistani airwaves, blending Amir Khusrau's classical khayal tradition with contemporary verse.
