NRK P1 is the main radio channel of Norway's public broadcaster, mixing popular music with news, current affairs and regional programmes for a broad adult audience. It is the most popular radio station in the country, and you can hear it live on Radio Shuffle for free. The stream here is the Greater Oslo regional feed.
What NRK P1 Broadcasts
According to Wikipedia's article on the channel, P1 is designed for the broad adult population, with a high proportion of popular music alongside lighter entertainment and current affairs, in both Bokmål and Nynorsk. It reaches roughly 1.9 million listeners a day, making it Norway's most popular station. NRK's own channels overview lists it alongside its other radio services.
Regional Radio for a Long Country
Norway is stretched over a very long coastline, so regional radio matters. NRK divides the country into eleven districts, ten following county boundaries and one for Sami-language services, and the district programmes are broadcast on P1 from 6:03 to 9:00 in the morning and 2:03 to 5:00 in the afternoon on weekdays, as summarised by Media Landscapes. Wikipedia counts fifteen regional programming centres producing around 24.5 hours of local programming a week. The Radio Shuffle stream is the Greater Oslo version of that structure.
From One Channel to Many
NRK was the only nationwide broadcasting channel until 1 September 1984, when NRK P2 began, and the modern P1 took shape in a 1993 reorganisation under radio director Tor Fuglevik, which also produced NRK P3. It once ran 1,176 FM transmitters on 124 frequencies, described as the largest radio network in Europe, before NRK switched its radio off FM and moved to DAB+ and the internet during 2017, according to Wikipedia. That is one reason internet streams matter so much to Norwegian radio listeners now.
The Emergency Channel
P1 also has a public safety role: it is the country's emergency channel, responsible for broadcasting official emergency messages, including via DAB radio. It is headquartered in Trondheim's Tyholt area, with news production at Broadcasting House in Oslo. That mix of pop music, local news and civil-defence duty is why many Norwegians treat it as the default radio.
