On Air Since 1931
Radio broadcasting in Bodø predates NRK's own national network. Kringkastingsselskapet A/S opened the Bodø broadcaster on February 15, 1931, marking the occasion with a program built around Per Sivle's poem "Utferdsdråpa" and music composed by local Bodø composer Fridtjov Anderssen. According to local historical records, Leif Jensson became the station's first program secretary. Just two years later, in 1933, Norsk Rikskringkasting took over the Bodø broadcaster, and NRK's own district office in the city was formally established in 1934, making NRK Nordland one of the broadcaster's oldest regional outposts. The original transmitter was upgraded to a more powerful 10 kilowatt unit in 1936.
Today NRK Nordland operates not just from Bodø but through local offices spread across Narvik, Sortland, Svolvær, Mo i Rana, and Brønnøysund, covering a county that stretches along one of the most dramatic and sparsely populated coastlines in Europe.
Part of a National Reform
The P1 channel that now carries NRK Nordland's regional programming has its own separate history. NRK P1 launched nationally on October 2, 1993, as the signature result of a broader NRK radio reform led by radio director Tor Fuglevik, restructuring how the national broadcaster organized its channels. Nordland's regional service slots into that national P1 structure, blending national programming with the kind of hyperlocal coverage that a county this remote and spread out genuinely needs.
What You'll Actually Hear
Expect local news and community coverage from across Nordland, regional events, and the cultural life of Arctic Norway's fishing and coastal towns, woven together with NRK's national P1 programming. It is public radio built for a county where the nearest neighboring town can be hours away by road or boat.
NRK P1 Nordland is free to stream on Radio Shuffle alongside thousands of other stations from around the world. Tune in to hear Arctic Norway's own regional voice.
