Mouv' is Radio France's hip-hop and urban music brand, built around French rap, with a stream you can play live on Radio Shuffle for free. It used to be found on FM in about thirty French cities, but Radio France announced in April 2025 that it would give up those frequencies and become a digital-only music brand, so the online stream is now how most people reach it.
What Mouv' Plays
Since its 2015 relaunch, the station has focused on hip-hop and urban culture, aimed at listeners between eighteen and thirty, with the slogan "Hip Hop never stop," according to Wikipedia's history of Mouv'. In July 2016 it staged Hip Hop Symphonique, which paired orchestral music with French rap artists including IAM, Youssoupha and MC Solaar. That mix of streets and concert hall is a good summary of its ambitions: a public radio station treating rap as serious music.
A Rock Station Born in Toulouse
Mouv' did not begin with rap. It started broadcasting on 17 June 1997 as Le Mouv', Radio France's attempt to reach young listeners with pop, rock and electronic dance music. It struggled to find a Paris frequency and set up in Toulouse in 1998, staying there for thirteen years before moving back to the Maison de la Radio in Paris in December 2010. For years its identity was alternative rock, with the slogan "L'esprit Rock," until the 2015 shift to hip-hop, as Wikipedia records.
Leaving the FM Dial
On 28 April 2025, Radio France president Sibyle Veil announced that Mouv' would return its thirty FM frequencies to the regulator Arcom and become a "100% musical, 100% digital" offering, according to Actu.news. Radio France gave two reasons: falling youth radio listening, since only 9 percent of 15 to 24 year-olds listen to music on the radio compared with over 80 percent on streaming, and a government mandate to cut costs. Unions criticised the decision, and the reorganisation put dozens of jobs at risk. Sud Formadia's report on the closure notes that Radio France also plans a public children's station on DAB+ from teams at France Inter.
Why the Stream Still Matters
Rap and urban music have been the most-listened-to genres in France for years, which is why the decision surprised many fans. For them, an online stream is now the simplest way to keep a public-service hip-hop channel in the background, and Radio Shuffle carries the Radio France feed for anyone wanting to sample it.
