Rai Radio 3 is Italy's public radio channel for classical music and culture, broadcasting concerts, drama, literature, history and ideas in Italian. It reaches listeners on FM, DAB+, digital terrestrial television and satellite, and you can hear it live on Radio Shuffle for free, from anywhere in the world.

What Rai Radio 3 Broadcasts

According to Wikipedia's article on the channel, the format spans classical and avant-garde music, including live concerts, alongside drama, literature, readings of classic works, history, economics, philosophy, religion, art and cinema, all delivered with a critical and analytical approach to information. Current programmes include Radio 3 Mondo on international news, Wikiradio and Ad alta voce, a reading of classic literature, according to Recensiamo Musica's history of the channel. It is also part of Euroradio, the exchange network of European public broadcasters that shares classical, jazz and cultural events.

A 1950 Idea Borrowed From the BBC

The channel began on 1 October 1950 as the Terzo Programma, the Third Programme, loosely modelled on the BBC Third Programme that had launched in 1946, as Wikipedia records. That first evening it broadcast from about 9pm to 11:15pm from FM transmitters in Bologna, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Rome, Turin and Venice, making it one of the first Italian services on the FM band. It was designed for an educated audience, with classical music, literature and drama and without commercial interruption.

From Concerto d'apertura to Radio 3

Classical music was central from the start. The station's long-running strip Concerto d'apertura began in 1951, and its successors Concerto ogni sera and Concerto della sera ran from 1953 to 1977, usually at about 7:15pm. As part of the 1975 Rai reform, the Terzo Programma took the name Radio 3, and Wikipedia gives the current name as adopted in the mid-1970s. In the 1980s it introduced improved sound processing to serve orchestral music and opera better.

Radio 3 Today

Rai Radio 3 is directed by Andrea Montanari and, since August 2022, has been linked at night with its sister channel Rai Radio 3 Classica, which carries classical music through the early hours, according to Wikipedia. For a listener abroad, it is one of the few places where a national broadcaster still treats a live concert as a daily event, with commentary in Italian and often a programme of Italian repertoire.
