Kenya's first privately owned FM station
Capital FM, known on the dial as 98.4 Capital FM, launched in 1996 under British businesswoman Lynda Holt, becoming Kenya's first privately owned FM radio station at a time when the country's airwaves were dominated by traditional, state-run programming, according to the station's own 30th-anniversary retrospective. It introduced a fresh, youthful, globally inspired urban sound that reshaped what FM radio could sound like in Kenya.
A new owner, a bigger platform
Businessman and industrialist Chris Kirubi acquired the station in 2003 and built it into what the company now calls one of Kenya's most influential multimedia platforms. Under his ownership Capital FM became one of the earliest East African media houses to embrace online live streaming well before digital listening went mainstream, while also introducing genres like rock, jazz, and neo soul to a mainstream Kenyan audience that had rarely heard them on commercial radio before.
From radio station to cultural festival
That genre-crossing instinct grew into Koroga Festival, a signature live event blending music, food, and lifestyle that became one of Nairobi's defining cultural experiences, extending Capital FM's identity well past a radio signal into live events and digital storytelling aimed at younger, digitally native listeners.
