One of Eighteen Regional Desks in Finland's Biggest Network

Yle Radio Suomi was established on June 1, 1990, when Finland's public broadcaster restructured its radio channels to unify the country's regional stations under one national network, a direct successor to the Rinnakkaisohjelma channel that had run since 1960. The network carries up to eight hours of regional programming on weekdays across 18 regional news desks, with Turku's feed broadcast only to listeners in its own area rather than nationally, so someone tuning in from Turku hears different regional content than a listener in Helsinki or Oulu. Yle Radio Suomi remains Finland's most listened radio station overall, holding roughly 51 percent market share nationwide.

Broadcasting From Finland's Oldest City

Turku gives this regional desk a genuinely significant backdrop. Founded around 1229 after Pope Gregory IX ordered Finland's bishopric moved to the banks of the Aura River, Turku grew into the administrative, academic and religious center of the eastern Swedish kingdom, a role reflected in landmarks like Turku Castle and Turku Cathedral, consecrated in 1300. The city briefly served as capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland from 1809 to 1812 before Helsinki took over, and more recently shared European Capital of Culture honors with Tallinn in 2011. It also carries the titles of Finland's Christmas City and Food Capital, nicknamed the Paris of Finland for its restaurant scene.
