Pop Radio From the City That Launched the Beatles

Listen Now

NDR 2 Hamburg carries the regional version of Germany's biggest northern pop station straight out of the city where a scrappy Liverpool band first became the Beatles. From August 1960 through December 1962, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and the rest of the band played clubs around the Reeperbahn, Hamburg's famous entertainment strip, before they were famous anywhere else in the world.

A Pop Signal Rooted in a Much Older Radio City

Hamburg's radio history goes back almost a century before NDR 2 ever signed on. Hans Bodenstedt founded the city's first broadcaster in 1924, and by 1929 the station was airing the Hamburg Harbour Concert, a live program built around the actual sounds of the port mixed with music. NDR 2 itself traces to NDR's predecessor NWDR introducing a dedicated northern regional service in 1950, which evolved into the pop-focused NDR 2 after Norddeutscher Rundfunk and Westdeutscher Rundfunk formally split from the joint NWDR broadcaster in the mid-1950s.

Still the Soundtrack for a City That Never Stopped Playing Live

That Reeperbahn club scene the Beatles broke into never went away. The same streets still host the Reeperbahn Festival, now billed as Europe's largest club festival, spreading emerging international acts across more than 90 venues every year. Hamburg has backed that reputation with serious infrastructure too, anchored by the Elbphilharmonie, home to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and the Ensemble Resonanz, proof that a city famous for noisy club rock also built one of Europe's most ambitious concert halls.

A Regional Feed Inside a Much Bigger Pop Station

NDR 2's main signal has run since January 1, 1956 under the tagline "Genau meine Musik," playing contemporary pop and three decades of hits for listeners across northern Germany, with Soundcheck music evenings and Saturday Bundesliga coverage built into the schedule. The Hamburg regional stream layers the city's own news and identity onto that wider format, giving the Reeperbahn's hometown station a direct line into NDR 2's broader pop rotation.
