NDR 1 Niedersachsen streams oldies, pop, and schlager alongside round-the-clock news and entertainment, and it holds the distinction of being the most-listened-to radio program in northern Germany. You can stream it free anytime on Radio Shuffle.
Rooted in One of Germany's Earliest Transmitters
The Hannover transmitter behind today's NDR 1 Niedersachsen has a history stretching back to January 1924, when it began life as an amplification relay for NORAG, the pioneering Hamburg broadcaster. After the Second World War, British occupation authorities founded the Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk in 1947, which split in 1955 into Westdeutscher Rundfunk and Norddeutscher Rundfunk, NDR's direct predecessor. The Lower Saxony regional broadcasting center that still houses the station's editorial office opened on the shores of Hannover's Maschsee lake in 1951.
The station took its current shape on January 2, 1981, when NDR1 was split into three independent regional programs, one for each state NDR covers. The Lower Saxony service was renamed NDR 1 Niedersachsen in 2002, locking in the identity it carries today.
A Genuinely Regional Structure
NDR 1 Niedersachsen does not treat Lower Saxony as a single undifferentiated market. The station organizes its coverage around five distinct sub-regions, Oldenburg-Ostfriesland-Bremen-Cuxhaven, Osnabrück-Emsland, greater Hanover, Braunschweig and southern Lower Saxony, and northern Lower Saxony, each getting locally relevant news and information within the wider broadcast. That structure is part of why the station has built the biggest audience of any radio program across northern Germany, skewing toward an older demographic than NDR's other channels.
Alongside NDR 1 Welle Nord, NDR 1 Radio MV, and NDR 90.3, it is one of four regional NDR programs mandated by the broadcaster's state treaty, each built for the specific audience of its own federal state.
