Older Than the Broadcaster That Owns It

WDR 2 has a genuinely unusual origin story: the station predates the organization that currently runs it. It first went on air on April 30, 1950, as NWDR UKW West, a service of the old Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk. It was not until 1955 and 1956 that NWDR was formally split into two separate broadcasters, Norddeutscher Rundfunk and Westdeutscher Rundfunk, the organization known today as WDR. So WDR 2 had already been broadcasting for several years before WDR itself formally existed as a separate entity.

That long institutional history has made WDR 2 one of the anchor stations of public radio in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, with the Rhein und Ruhr regional stream serving the dense urban corridor running through Cologne, Düsseldorf, and the Ruhr industrial area.

The Station Behind Germany's Bundesliga Soundtrack

WDR 2 built its identity on a combination of contemporary pop and rock programming aimed at adults, paired with a strong information and news service. What really sets it apart nationally, though, is football. WDR 2 produces the ARD-Bundesligakonferenz, the live Saturday afternoon conference broadcast that switches between every top-flight German match in progress, and that program is relayed by up to 20 other radio stations across the country. For millions of German football fans, the voice calling goals from across the league on a Saturday afternoon is coming from a WDR 2 studio.

That combination of serious journalism, credible moderation, and must-listen sports coverage has kept WDR 2 central to how North Rhine-Westphalia starts its weekend.
