Maunganui FM streams local vibes and student-made radio from Mount Maunganui College in New Zealand, a community station run by the students themselves. It is free to stream right now on Radio Shuffle, anywhere in the world, no account required.
Run by Students at the Foot of a Sacred Mountain
Maunganui FM is run out of Mount Maunganui College, a state secondary school established in 1958 under the motto "Sapientia Carior Auro," wisdom is more precious than gold. The station describes its own identity simply as "local vibes from mount college," and it runs on a rotating roster of student presenters rather than a fixed professional lineup, giving each new group of students a turn behind the microphone.
Broadcasting in the Shadow of Mauao
The school and station both take their name from the town that surrounds them, itself named for Mauao, the volcanic lava dome known in Māori legend and colloquially called simply "The Mount." The town sits on a tombolo, a sand bar connecting the mountain to the mainland, and stayed an independent town from neighboring Tauranga until the Tauranga Harbour Bridge finally linked the two in 1988. Growth followed an export port development and the maturing pine forests of the Central Plateau through the 1950s, turning a beach settlement into the coastal community the station now serves.
Part of New Zealand's Student Radio Tradition
Student-run stations have deep roots in New Zealand broadcasting, from pioneering efforts like Sounds FM, which started life as X-Static FM at Marlborough Boys' College back in 1986. Maunganui FM carries that same tradition forward today, giving students at one more New Zealand school hands-on experience running a live station for their own community rather than just studying radio from the outside.
