NiUS Radio has existed for less than five years, young enough that the people who launched it are still around to celebrate its birthday. It started as a single project inside a university media center and grew into a station run largely by the students it was built to train.
Launched Inside a New Media Education Center
NiUS Radio began official broadcasting on 6 December 2021 as part of the University of Szczecin's newly established Media Education and Interactivity Center, according to local coverage of the station's founding. The timing put the station inside a broader institutional push to build out the university's media training infrastructure rather than launching as a standalone student club project, giving it access to real studio equipment and faculty oversight from day one.
A First Birthday With a Voice Finalist on Stage
The station marked its first anniversary on 6 December 2022 with an event at the Municipal Cultural Center in Przecław, an occasion big enough to draw university leadership, faculty, students and local residents, according to the university's own account of the celebration. The night's lineup included flute performances from Adam Jamroza and a set from Łukasz Drapała & Chevy, finalists on the Polish edition of The Voice, a lineup that treated the station's birthday as a genuine cultural event rather than an internal office party.
A Mission Statement From the Deputy Rector
Prorektor Andrzej Skrendo described the station's purpose in institutional terms at the anniversary, framing its role as educating, informing, and promoting a modern image of the university while staying open to the wider world. Dr. Konrad Wojtyła, director of the Media and Interactivity Education Center that houses the station, put the first year's progress more simply: "Through a year, we accomplished much, yet aspire to greater heights. This represents our collective success."
Run Day to Day by Students
Coordinator Paulina Zaremba oversees a station whose editorial board is built from dozens of student contributors, supplemented by content produced directly by faculty. That structure makes NiUS Radio less a top-down institutional broadcaster and more a training ground where students handle the actual editorial and production work, with the university providing the platform rather than dictating the content.
Broadcasting Out of Szczecin, Streaming Everywhere
The station operates out of Szczecin in Poland's West Pomeranian voivodeship, streaming through Airtime and maintaining an active presence on YouTube and Instagram alongside its own podcast output. That spread lets a station built for a specific campus community reach anyone streaming online, well past the physical reach a campus-only broadcast would ever have.
NiUS Radio is still young enough to count its anniversaries in single digits, but it has already built the thing university media centers are usually trying to prove they can do: a station students actually run, not just staff.
