The College Station That Reunited Big Star

Listen Now

KCOU 88.1 FM is a noncommercial, entirely student-run station at the University of Missouri in Columbia, currently owned and operated by the Missouri Students Association. It runs a broad, genre-hopping schedule built around music otherwise ignored by commercial Midwest radio, alongside campus news, Mizzou sports coverage, and student-hosted talk shows.

From a Dorm Broom Closet to FM

KCOU's roots go back to 1963, when it started life as KCCS, a carrier-current AM station broadcast out of a dorm broom closet at 580 kHz. A decade later, the Independent Residence Halls Association received an FCC license to broadcast at 88.3 MHz, notable at the time as the first FCC license ever issued to a student group rather than a university's administration. The FM signal went live for the first time on October 31, 1973, reaching most of Columbia at 10 watts.

The Night Big Star Played Again

KCOU's most famous moment came on April 25, 1993, when two Mizzou students, Mike Mulvihill and Jeff Breeze, talked Alex Chilton into reuniting Big Star for the station's annual SpringFest. Chilton and original drummer Jody Stephens played alongside Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of the Posies, marking the cult band's first live performance since 1974. The show was later released as the live album Columbia: Live at Missouri University 4/25/93, a recording still cited in accounts of college radio's cultural reach. Six years earlier, in 1989, College Music Journal had already named KCOU Best College Radio Station of the Year.

A Shutdown and a Buyback

KCOU's history was not all high points. Months after the Big Star show, the station was shut down over claims of financial mismanagement, and its entire staff was let go. It briefly resurfaced as KEJJ "The Edge" with a Top 40 format, an attempt that failed quickly, before community pressure helped bring the KCOU name and its alternative programming back. The Missouri Students Association ultimately bought the station outright for $80,000, putting it back in student hands, where it has stayed since.

Why Tune In

KCOU is a genuine freeform college station with a documented place in music history, home to the SpringFest that brought Big Star back to a stage for the first time in nearly twenty years. For listeners who want the kind of eclectic, student-curated programming that commercial radio has never had room for, it is one of the more storied names in American college radio.
