Born as a Satellite-Only Channel
The station began in 1996 as an audio-only channel exclusive to subscribers of Astro, Malaysia's satellite TV network, before making the jump to terrestrial FM on August 1, 1998, according to the station's own history. Its first song on FM was "Hijau" by Zainal Abidin, a fitting choice for a station that launched as the first privately owned radio station to broadcast entirely in Malay, breaking the monopoly that government-run RTM stations had held over the language on the airwaves until then.
From Era FM to Simply ERA
The station carried the name Era FM for nearly two decades before Astro Radio rebranded it to simply ERA on January 2, 2018, part of a broader push to position the station as a platform that reached beyond traditional FM broadcasting. It still runs today out of Astro Radio's headquarters in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, operating 24 hours a day under the Astro Audio division of Astro Malaysia Holdings.
Malaysia's Biggest Malay-Language Audience
That history has built real scale. A 2015 Nielsen RAM Survey put ERA's weekly audience above 4.8 million listeners, holding its position as Malaysia's leading Malay-language station, with coverage stretching across Peninsular Malaysia into East Malaysia's Sabah and Sarawak.
