Virgin Radio Switzerland runs a 24-hour rock format out of Zurich today, but the name on the dial belongs to a brand that started in an entirely different country, under an entirely different owner, 25 years earlier. The Swiss station is a local license of Richard Branson's Virgin Radio, and its own path to a single unified identity took a few unexpected turns.
A Brand Born From a UK License Battle
Virgin Radio began life as Virgin 1215, launched on April 30, 1993, after Branson's Virgin Group won a hard-fought competition for the UK's first national commercial rock license from the Radio Authority. That original station became, according to a history of the brand, the template for a licensing model Virgin has repeated worldwide ever since: local operators own and run each Virgin Radio station independently, paying to use the name and format rather than answering to Virgin Group directly. The approach has since spread the brand to more than 60 stations across countries including France, Italy, Lebanon, and the UAE.
Zurich's Version Launched as Two Stations, Not One
Switzerland got its own Virgin Radio license on January 17, 2018, but not as a single station. AZ Medien launched it as a pair, Virgin Radio Rock Switzerland alongside a sister station, Virgin Radio Hits Switzerland, splitting rock programming from a chart-hits format under the same umbrella brand. Ownership shifted again less than a year later, when CH Media, a joint venture between AZ Medien and the NZZ Media Group formed on October 1, 2018, took over both stations.
One Station Absorbs the Other
The two-station structure didn't last. Virgin Radio Hits Switzerland shut down in November 2021, and rather than disappearing entirely, its programming space and audience folded into the rock station, which dropped "Rock" from its name to become simply Virgin Radio Switzerland. What started as a deliberate split between two music formats ended up consolidating back into one general station carrying the Virgin name for the whole country.
A Local Station Wearing a Global License
Virgin Radio Switzerland's rock playlist today has more in common with CH Media's Zurich operations than with anything happening at Virgin Group headquarters, but the brand itself carries three decades of history from a UK license fight most Swiss listeners have never heard of. It's a quiet example of how a single 1993 broadcasting decision in London ended up shaping what plays on FM dials and DAB+ sets in Zurich a generation later.
