Spoon Radio exists because a small group of rock fans in Switzerland got tired of waiting for someone else to build the station they wanted. According to an interview with founder Terence Clinton, the project launched in July 2009 after its founders concluded there simply were not enough FM frequencies available for a truly rock-focused station, so they built one online instead. Spoon Radio - Alternative Rock is one of several thematic channels that grew out of that original idea.
From a Web-Only Project to a National DAB+ Presence
Spoon Radio stayed internet-only for its first several years before expanding into Geneva and Zurich broadcasts in 2014, and it now also transmits across Switzerland on the RNT DAB+ network alongside its streaming platforms. That progression, web radio first, national digital broadcast second, mirrors exactly the direction Swiss radio as a whole has been forced to move.
A Station Built for Switzerland's Digital Radio Shift
Switzerland has been phasing out FM more aggressively than almost anywhere else in Europe. The public broadcaster SRG SSR switched off its FM signal entirely at the end of 2024, and private stations have been told they can keep FM running only until the end of 2026 before digital-only becomes the norm nationwide. By late 2024, only 8 percent of Swiss listeners were still tuning in exclusively via FM. A station born as a web radio and only later added to DAB+ was, in effect, already built for the listening habits the rest of the country is now being pushed toward.
One Channel Among Several
Spoon Radio's main feed runs a broad rock format under the slogan "Real Rock Radio," but the network has split into dedicated channels covering classics, ballads, modern rock, acoustic, hard rock, and this alternative rock stream specifically. That structure lets it hold onto AC/DC and Pink Floyd fans on one channel while giving the alternative and indie crowd, drawn to newer international acts and classic independent rock, a feed built entirely around their own taste rather than a shared general playlist.
A Real Audience for a DIY Idea
What started as a workaround for a lack of FM licenses has grown into a station reporting close to 900,000 monthly server connections, making it one of the most-listened-to French-language rock outlets on the internet. For a project that began because its founders simply could not get airtime any other way, that scale is a fairly direct vindication of the original idea.
