Carved Out of a Rock Network's Rebrand
Virgin Radio Metal is a web-only extension of Virgin Radio, the French network that took over the FM and DAB+ broadcasts of Virage Radio when Espace Group relaunched the station under the Virgin name on April 15, 2024. Virage Radio had already built a rock format across more than 30 French cities before that switch, and Virgin Radio Metal carries the same Espace Group lineage into a genre specific stream dedicated purely to metal rather than rock in general.
A Separate Story From the Old Virgin Radio
This is not a continuation of the Virgin Radio that French listeners may remember from the 2000s. That earlier network, owned by Lagardère, ran under the Virgin name from 2008 until reverting to its original identity, Europe 2, in 2023 after Lagardère stopped paying Richard Branson's company for use of the brand. Espace Group's relaunch, based in the Lyon area, is an entirely separate operation that picked up the dormant Virgin Radio name for its own rock and metal stations.
