A genre that finally broke through in France
French metal spent decades as a genuinely underground scene before one band changed that. Gojira, formed in the town of Ondres under the name Godzilla in 1996 before renaming in 2001, built a reputation on progressive, technical death metal carrying environmental and philosophical themes, and signed to Prosthetic Records in 2008, a deal that helped its album The Way of All Flesh crack the Billboard 200, according to coverage of the French metal revolution. Listenable Records founder Laurent Merle has said that before Gojira, most metal fans outside France would have struggled to name more than a couple of worthwhile bands from the country. That changed decisively in 2024, when Gojira performed "Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)" at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, a performance that went on to win the band a Grammy for Best Metal Performance after three earlier nominations.
One genre, no algorithm, full-time
FIP Metal carries that same metal identity into FIP's wider structure, a Radio France network launched in 1971 on the premise that no genre or era gets excluded from its antenna, programmed track by track by in-house curators rather than a recommendation algorithm. Where FIP's main signal mixes jazz, chanson, world music and electronic sounds into one eclectic rotation, FIP Metal narrows that same hand-picked approach down to hard rock, metal and thrash exclusively, giving the genre a dedicated, commercial-free home inside a public broadcaster built around musical range rather than format radio's usual narrow lane.
