Power & Prog Metal from Ontario

Metal fans who like their riffs long, their solos technical, and their choruses soaring have a home station. The Armory streams power metal and progressive metal around the clock from Prog Palace Radio, broadcasting out of Ontario, Canada, and you can tune in free right now on Radio Shuffle.

The station's roots go back to the fall of 1999, when it launched as a general progressive rock outlet called The Prog Palace. Within two years the name changed to Prog Palace Radio, and the playlist drifted harder toward metal as power metal entered the rotation. That shift split the station's identity into two companion channels that still run today: The Courtyard, which keeps the prog rock flame alive, and The Armory, which leans fully into power and progressive metal.

The Armory earns its name. Instead of racking rifles, it stacks riffs, built around the genre's signature blend of galloping double-kick drumming, operatic vocal lines, and guitar solos that refuse to end early. It is the kind of station built for listeners who think a song isn't really progressive unless it clears the ten-minute mark, and Prog Palace Radio's own schedule backs that up directly with a weekly show called The Epics, airing Saturdays at 6pm ET and dedicated entirely to compositions running at least 25 minutes long.

That same schedule rounds out the week with Thrashy Thursdays, two hours of thrash metal every Thursday at 7pm ET, and The Prog Metal Show, a live Saturday broadcast at 7pm ET that doubles as a podcast for listeners who can't catch it live. The station has kept this lineup running for roughly a quarter century now, a rare feat for an internet radio project, and it still describes its mission the same unpretentious way it always has: delivering progressive and power metal to whoever wants it, built and maintained from a small corner of Ontario rather than a major broadcast market.

Community has stayed part of the package the whole way through. The station runs a live chat during broadcasts, keeps an active Bandcamp collection stocked with hundreds of albums and tracks pulled from the power and prog metal scene, and still takes calls through an old-fashioned dial-in line, a small detail that says a lot about a station that has outlasted plenty of bigger, better-funded competitors by simply sticking to what it does.

Power metal itself grew out of the European and North American metal scenes of the 1980s, built on the melodic foundations of bands like Helloween and Blind Guardian, who proved that metal could be triumphant and theatrical without losing its heaviness. Progressive metal borrowed the structural ambition of prog rock acts like Rush and grafted it onto metal's volume, producing bands such as Dream Theater and Symphony X that treat a song more like a suite than a single. The Armory sits right at the intersection of both lineages, which is exactly why fans of either camp tend to stick around once they find it.

For anyone who grew up on double albums and twelve-minute closing tracks, or who just wants guitar solos that earn their length, The Armory is streaming free on Radio Shuffle, no sign-up required.
