VCY America now runs a national Christian radio network out of Milwaukee, but its very first broadcast almost never happened. It exists because three teenagers refused to give up after every radio station in the city said no to them.

Turned Down Everywhere, Then a Stranger Walked In

Per the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association's account of the station's 60th anniversary, three teenagers approached Vic Eliason in 1959, then director of Youth for Christ Milwaukee, wanting to launch a Christian radio program of their own. Every station in Milwaukee turned them down. According to the association's telling, the group prayed about it, and three days later a man walked into their small office and asked, "Anyone here want some free air time?" That offer became "Sacred Stylings," which aired for the first time on May 15, 1961, over WBON 107.7 FM.

From a Youth Group to a National Christian Network

Per Wikipedia's entry on VCY America, the organization's roots go back further still, to 1954, when it began as Youth for Christ Milwaukee under Theo McCully. After the WBON broadcast gave the group its own radio identity, the station was eventually acquired and renamed the Wisconsin Voice of Christian Youth, WVCY, and the ministry left the national Youth for Christ organization in 1973 to run independently under that name. Eliason expanded further in 1983 with WVCY-TV on Channel 30 in Milwaukee, before the organization adopted its current name, VCY America, in 1995.

A Program Still Named for Where It All Started

That first program's name never went away. Decades later, Sacred Stylings continues as a dedicated stream within the VCY America Radio Network, now reaching listeners nationally online rather than through a single Milwaukee FM signal, alongside the network's wider mix of Bible teaching, call-in programs, news and commentary, and radio dramas.

Why It's Worth Tuning In

VCY America's national stream carries the name of a program that started because a handful of teenagers would not accept being told no, one free hour of Milwaukee airtime in 1961 that grew into a broadcast network still running the same program name more than sixty years later.
