Three Teenagers, One Prayer, and Free Airtime

The station's origin story reads like a sermon illustration because it essentially is one. In 1959, Vic Eliason took over as director of Youth for Christ Milwaukee, and soon after, three teenagers approached him wanting to start a Christian radio program, according to the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. Every station in Milwaukee turned them down. The group prayed for guidance, and within three days a stranger offered them free airtime. Sacred Stylings, the program that resulted, aired for the first time on May 15, 1961, over WBON 107.7 FM, the frequency this same station still occupies today.

From WBON to WVCY-FM

The frequency itself first signed on as WBON in February 1964 under different ownership, airing religious and classical music at limited power, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. The organization that grew out of Eliason's ministry, by then renamed the Wisconsin Voice of Christian Youth, bought the station in 1973 and changed its call letters to WVCY, upgrading transmission to a full Class B signal. When the ministry, renamed VCY America in 1995, purchased a second station in Oshkosh that same year, the original Milwaukee signal added the "-FM" suffix to become WVCY-FM, distinguishing it from its new AM sister station.

No Contemporary Christian Music, By Design

WVCY-FM draws a firm line most Christian stations do not: it completely disallows Christian contemporary music in any form, according to Wikipedia, sticking instead to traditional Christian music paired with talk and teaching programming. Shows like Crosstalk, Grace to You, and In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley anchor a schedule built around Bible teaching rather than a radio-friendly worship playlist, a deliberate stance that sets it apart from most modern Christian FM formats.

A Network Built From One Frequency

What began as a single Milwaukee signal has grown into a genuine broadcasting network. By VCY America's 60th anniversary in 2021, the ministry operated 54 owned-and-operated stations plus 80 affiliates, reaching more than 16 million listeners, per the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, alongside a television station, three Christian day schools, and a 385-acre camp in Hillsboro, Wisconsin. Vic Eliason led the organization until his death in 2015, when Jim Schneider took over as executive director.

Why Tune In

WVCY-FM carries more than sixty years of history on a single Milwaukee frequency, from a prayer-answered favor to teenagers into the flagship of a nationwide Christian broadcasting network. For listeners who want Bible teaching and traditional Christian music without any contemporary worship crossover, it offers a distinct, deliberately old-school alternative.
