A fortress built to guard the Volga
Ulyanovsk did not start out as a city that needed pop radio. According to the history of the city, the boyar Bogdan Khitrovo founded it in 1648 on the orders of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, building a fortress on the high Volga bank specifically to guard Russia's eastern frontier against nomadic raids. The settlement was called Simbirsk for nearly three centuries, a garrison town turned river port long before anyone there was choosing a playlist.
Renamed for the man born in its streets
The city's current name is only a century old. Vladimir Ulyanov, who the world remembers as Lenin, was born in Simbirsk in 1870, and the city was renamed Ulyanovsk in his honor in 1924, with his childhood home preserved as a museum to this day.
