Radio Record Liquid Funk streams melodic, soulful drum and bass, the smoother end of a genre usually associated with aggressive breakbeats. It is one of dozens of genre-specific channels run by Radio Record, the St Petersburg broadcaster that was Russia's first dance-format station, and it streams live and free right now on Radio Shuffle, no account needed.
The genre that slowed drum and bass down without losing it
Drum and bass built its reputation on speed and aggression, fast breakbeats pushed to the edge of chaos. Liquid funk, also called liquid drum and bass, took the same 160 to 180 BPM breakbeat engine and pointed it somewhere gentler. According to a history of the subgenre, the style traces back to 1999, when DJ Fabio and vocalist Sarah Sandy began championing what they called liquid funk on a compilation of the same name for their Creative Source label, drawing on ambient, funk, disco, house and trance influences and leaning heavily on vocals rather than sampled fragments. The sound caught on slowly at first, then grew rapidly between 2003 and 2005 until it became one of the best-selling corners of drum and bass, carried by labels like Hospital Records, Liquid V and Shogun Limited and artists including Calibre, Netsky, LTJ Bukem and High Contrast.
Russia's first dance station
Radio Record itself has a specific claim to fame in Russian broadcasting. Founded on 22 August 1995 and based in St Petersburg, it became, according to a history of the station, the first Russian radio station to switch entirely to a dance music format, a decision reportedly driven by a vote of its own listening audience rather than a programming committee. It began broadcasting via satellite across European Russia in 2004, turning a single Petersburg signal into something closer to a national electronic music network.
One genre channel among dozens
Radio Record's real engine is its willingness to split off into genre-specific streams rather than force every listener into one playlist. In 2018 the network expanded its channel lineup to include Liquid Funk alongside Neurofunk, Techtonik, 2-Step, Jungle, Synthwave, Moombahton and straight Drum 'n' Bass Hits, letting fans of one specific sound tune into exactly that sound instead of waiting through genres they skip. Liquid Funk is the channel built for the moments when drum and bass needs to feel warm rather than relentless, soulful vocal hooks and jazz-tinted chords riding the same breakbeat skeleton as its harder siblings.
Why liquid funk rewards patient listening
What makes liquid funk worth seeking out specifically is the contrast built into its own structure: a rhythm section built for rave energy, carrying melodies and vocals built for a much calmer mood. It works at a club night and just as easily on headphones during a quiet commute, which is part of why the sound kept its following long after its mid-2000s commercial peak.
