Germany's first full-time private station

R.SH carries a specific piece of German broadcasting history. It went on air on 1 July 1986 as Radio Schleswig-Holstein, and according to a station profile from audio marketer Audiohouse, that launch made it the first nationwide private radio station in Germany to run a full 24-hour program, at a time when West German broadcasting was still dominated by public networks. Private, commercial radio was a genuinely new idea in the country, and R.SH was the station that proved a full schedule could run on it.

Based in Kiel, owned by the region's own publishers

R.SH broadcasts from the Radiozentrum Kiel alongside sister stations delta radio and Radio NORA, all under the same roof in the regional capital. Ownership traces back to the station's own backyard too: R.SH sits under Regiocast, a broadcasting group roughly 40 percent owned by Schleswig-Holstein's own newspaper publishers, keeping a station built on regional identity tied to regional media companies four decades after launch.

Chasing trends from a holiday island

Since 2015, R.SH has run a live summer presence from Sylt, the North Sea holiday island famous for its dunes, lighthouses and wealthy second-home crowd. Presenters report daily on the island's trends, local characters and seasonal buzz, an on-location commitment few regional stations bother to maintain year after year, and one that keeps R.SH's identity tied to a very specific stretch of German coastline rather than a generic studio feed.

Still the region's most-listened private station

Decades after its 1986 launch, R.SH remains the most-listened private radio station in both Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, according to regional audience measurement data tracked by Audiohouse. The Top 40 channel is the station's hit music engine, current chart songs in heavy rotation for an audience that made R.SH a regional habit well before streaming existed as an option at all.
