Built on a Los Angeles Blueprint
104.6 RTL went on air on September 9, 1991, less than a year after German reunification, and its founders modeled both the station's sound and its studio construction directly on Los Angeles station KIIS-FM, according to a history of the station on Wikipedia. That American hit-radio blueprint, transplanted into a reunified Berlin, helped build what is now the city's market-leading commercial station across the 14 to 49 age demographic.
Still Berlin's Biggest, Decades Later
104.6 RTL now reaches 654,000 listeners on an average weekday and 326,000 within its core 14-49 demographic, according to Media Analysis figures reported by RMS Deutschland, keeping its position as market leader in the city more than three decades after launch. The breakfast show that helped build that lead, Arno und die Morgencrew, has run with host Arno Müller since the station's very first broadcast in 1991.
100 Digital Channels and Counting
Beyond its main FM signal, 104.6 RTL now runs what it calls Germany's largest stable of digital music streams, a free lineup that has grown to roughly 100 themed channels under the "104.6 RTL Streaming-Welt" banner, covering everything from decade-specific throwbacks to genre-focused feeds built for listening situations the main broadcast day can't cover. Since 1997, the station has also staged Stars for Free, an annual open-air concert at the Kindl-Bühne Wuhlheide that has grown into one of Germany's largest free music festivals.
