Radio Northumberland runs entirely on volunteer labor, no one on the schedule gets paid for their time, yet the station has still managed to attract presenters with genuine national broadcasting credentials. That combination, a purely community-funded operation punching above its budget, is what separates it from a typical small-town internet station.
Started in 2012 With One Simple Goal
The station began broadcasting online in January 2012, built around a mission the station still states plainly on its own about page: to give the local community an opportunity to get involved in radio and to draw local organizations and community groups into broadcasting. More than a decade later, the station still runs that way, staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers rather than professional radio employees.
A Schedule Built on Specialist Shows
Rather than running a single blended playlist, Radio Northumberland fills its week with dedicated genre shows, a 60s Hour, New Romantics and New Wave programming, Country Hour, a folk show, and The Local History Show hosted by Alan Fryer. That kind of narrow, specialist scheduling is typical of community radio built by people who each want to run their own hour of something they actually care about, rather than a station trying to hold one consistent commercial sound all day.
Recruiting a Genuine Country Music Veteran
In October 2015, the station added a presenter whose credentials went well beyond typical community radio. Brian Clough, who had spent over three decades as the primary voice of country music across the North East through stints at Metro Radio, Great North Radio, Century and Smooth Radio, launched "The American Connection Show" on Radio Northumberland, according to coverage of the announcement. Clough had personally interviewed Johnny Cash and Tammy Wynette during his career and won the Country Music Association of America's International Country Music Broadcaster of the Year award in 2009. Station manager Stewart Allen, himself a 30-year local radio veteran, called Clough's arrival part of the station's "ever growing schedule of entertaining programmes," a notable coup for a station that pays none of its presenters.
A Cruise Director on the Roster Too
Clough isn't the only presenter with an unusual career path. Tony Markey, who once competed in Song For Europe and performed with his wife across North East Clubland venues, spent more than three decades entertaining on cruise ships, including 16 years as a cruise director, before joining the Radio Northumberland lineup. It's an eclectic mix of backgrounds, professional broadcaster, cruise entertainer, that a purely volunteer station can assemble precisely because nobody is being paid to be there. People show up because they want to.
Serving a County of Castles and Coastline
Radio Northumberland broadcasts into a county known for its castle-dotted coastline, from Bamburgh to Alnwick, and a landscape sparse enough that national commercial stations rarely bother covering it in any local depth. A volunteer-run station filling that gap with local history segments and community shout-outs is doing a job the bigger networks have largely abandoned in rural England.
Small Budget, Real Talent
Radio Northumberland's core identity hasn't changed much since its 2012 launch, still community-run, still unpaid, still built around whoever in the region wants to host a show. What has changed is who's willing to volunteer for it, and landing a presenter with Johnny Cash on his resume suggests the station has built more credibility than its all-volunteer budget would normally suggest.
