Tarapoto's Only Cumbia Station, Broadcasting From the Amazonian Genre's Home Turf

Listen Now

Radio Karicia bills itself as the only cumbia station in Tarapoto, a claim that carries more weight than it might in most cities. Tarapoto sits in Peru's San Martín region, the same stretch of Amazon jungle that produced one of the genre's most influential sounds, so a station built entirely around cumbia here is less a niche format than a direct continuation of the region's own musical export.

A City Built Between Rivers and Jungle

Tarapoto sits between the Cumbaza and Shilcayo rivers in Peru's high jungle, a green, warm city of around 180,000 people that functions as San Martín's largest urban center and a natural crossing point between the Andes and the Amazonian lowlands. That geography, wedged between two very different Peruvian landscapes, has always made the region a meeting point for outside musical influences, including the Colombian cumbia and vallenato that AM radio signals carried deep into the jungle decades ago.

The Region That Built Cumbia Amazónica

That imported sound did not stay imported for long. In 1973, a group of musicians from Moyobamba, the capital of the same San Martín region Tarapoto belongs to, formed Los Mirlos and began running electric guitars through the frantic, psychedelic riffs that came to define cumbia amazónica. Founder Jorge Rodríguez Grández built the sound on an unlikely lineage, his father's accordion giving way to electric guitar, the AM radio broadcasts of Colombian cumbia giving way to something distinctly Amazonian. Fifty years later, that same band was playing Coachella, an improbable arc for a sound that started in a jungle city not far from where Radio Karicia now broadcasts.

A Genre Still Lived, Not Just Played

Tarapoto itself remains a place where cumbia amazónica is performed as much as it is heard on the radio, with weekend live sets and annual festivals keeping the genre active in public plazas rather than confined to old recordings. A station devoted entirely to cumbia fits naturally into that environment, functioning less like a specialty format and more like the soundtrack the city already produces on its own.

Local by Design

Operating out of Jr. San Pedro in central Tarapoto, Radio Karicia keeps its identity tightly regional, styling its programming with the slogan "Está Buenísima" and running an active social presence for a listener base that treats cumbia less as a genre choice than as the default sound of home. For a city sitting this close to where cumbia amazónica was invented, that is exactly the role a local station should play.
