Ocean Radio Spain plays classic and current English-language hits for British and English-speaking listeners scattered across Spain, but the station's roots trace back to a very specific moment: the Canary Islands under pandemic curfew in early 2021, when a small team decided holidaymakers still deserved a radio station that sounded like home.
Born Under Curfew in Tenerife
The Ocean brand actually started with Ocean Gold, an oldies station that launched on 87.5 FM in Tenerife in January 2021 under station director Stefan Moverley and programme director Daryl Denham, playing what Denham called "feel-good oldies" from the 1970s and 80s, according to RadioToday's coverage of the launch. Denham later admitted the timing was rough, the island was still under COVID curfew and movement restrictions, but the team built the station anyway rather than waiting for the pandemic to pass.
A Second Station for a Younger Crowd
Two months later, the same team followed up with Ocean Radio itself, launching on March 16, 2021 on 91.5 FM in Tenerife, 92.5 in Gran Canaria and 90.3 in Fuerteventura, this time built around hits from the 1990s to today rather than Ocean Gold's older catalog, as RadioToday reported at the time. Denham described the goal plainly: giving British holidaymakers in the Canaries a station "every bit as good as the stations they'd hear back home," rather than leaving them stuck scanning Spanish-language FM.
Two Stations, One Programme Director
With Daryl Denham steering both the oldies-focused Ocean Gold and the newer, current-hits Ocean Radio, the two stations effectively split the Canary Islands' English-speaking holiday audience by age and taste rather than competing for the same listeners. A larger presenter roster followed quickly, including Tim Lichfield, Ross Kay, Debbie Mac and Kam Kelly, turning what started as a curfew-era side project into a full daytime and weekend schedule within weeks of launch.
From Island FM Signal to Mainland Reach
What began as three FM frequencies across Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura has since grown into a streaming presence branded specifically as Ocean Radio Spain, reaching English-speaking residents and tourists well beyond the islands and across the Spanish mainland. The station kept its original "Your Holiday Station" identity even as its actual audience expanded past the beach resorts it was built for.
A Soundtrack for Not Feeling Far From Home
Ocean Radio Spain's whole reason for existing is still the same one Denham described back in 2021: English speakers abroad who want music, local information and on-air personalities that feel familiar rather than foreign. It just happens that the station was born in one of the stranger moments to launch anything, a Canary Islands lockdown, and grew from there into a station that now reaches well past the beaches it started on.
