Porão da Nau radio takes its name, and its entire identity, from a nightclub that closed its doors decades ago but never quite left Lisbon's collective memory. Opened by a Radio Man, Run by a Theatre Producer
The original Porão da Nau opened on February 17, 1965, on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo near the Cinema-Teatro Monumental. It was inaugurated by radio broadcaster Rui Castelar, who then sub-leased the space to theatre entrepreneur Vasco Morgado, an unusual pairing of a radio voice and a stage impresario that set the club on its way to becoming one of the defining venues of Lisbon nightlife.
Where Bohemian Lisbon Ended Its Nights
Through the 1960s, Porão da Nau became the place where Lisbon's night owls landed after everything else had closed, a mix of theatre people, bohemians, and television and radio figures who kept the club running until early morning. That reputation carried it through the 1970s as, by most accounts, the best nightclub in the city, before an inevitable decline set in as tastes and the city's nightlife map shifted.
A Second Life as an Afternoon Dance Floor
Rather than fading out entirely, the venue found a second act in the 1980s hosting some of Lisbon's most popular matinés, afternoon dance sessions aimed at a younger crowd who wanted the club experience without waiting for midnight. That two-act history, an all-night 60s and 70s hotspot followed by an 80s teen matiné institution, is exactly why the radio station built in its name plays across both eras rather than picking one.
The Building Is Gone, the Playlist Remains
The physical Porão da Nau no longer exists. A beer hall called Cervejaria Maracaña now occupies the same address on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo, one more entry in the long list of Lisbon nightlife landmarks that got repurposed once the music stopped. Porão da Nau radio exists specifically to make sure the music itself did not disappear along with the building, curating the disco and dance hits that once filled the dance floor and inviting listeners to share their own memories of the club and others like it.
