From Radio Contact to Kiss FM
Kiss FM's history goes back further than its current name suggests. According to a history of the station, it began broadcasting in Bucharest on 25 February 1990 as Radio Contact, just weeks after the Romanian revolution that ended communist rule. The station rebranded as Kiss FM on 5 November 2003, after a Belgian radio network acquired it, and had already expanded across the border into Chișinău, Moldova back in 1998, making it one of the few Romanian commercial stations with a genuinely regional footprint rather than a purely domestic one.
Passed between two major European broadcasters
Ownership of Kiss FM later passed to German media group ProSiebenSat.1, before the Greek broadcaster ANT1 Group bought the station on 23 December 2013 as ProSiebenSat.1 exited its Romanian operations entirely. That kind of ownership churn is common for successful commercial stations across Central and Eastern Europe, where a strong local brand often becomes more valuable to international buyers than to the original owners who built it.
Built around hits, not deep cuts
Kiss FM's current schedule leans entirely into its hit radio branding, with shows like Kiss Top 40, hosted by Andreea Berghea on Saturday afternoons, DesKiss Dimineața as the weekday morning comedy and entertainment show, and Kiss Kiss in the Mix bringing DJ sets from Yaang and OLiX into evening drive time. The station also runs its own interactive contests and extends its reach well past FM through podcasts, playlists and an active social media presence across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
Romania's biggest radio brand, by the numbers that matter most
By the early 2010s, industry reporting had Kiss FM as Romania's most listened station both nationally and in urban markets, with a market share close to 10 percent, a dominant position for a station that started three decades earlier as a small post-revolution broadcaster rather than a backed commercial launch.
