An online-only station running since 2014
Radio Cartier Romania launched on 4 July 2014, describing itself as one of the few Romanian internet radios built around professionalism, broadcasting an exclusively online signal 24 hours a day out of Romania. Beyond daily programming, the station has tied itself to the wider Romanian rap scene it covers, including a 2022 community event in Alba Iulia where rapper Cedry2k performed and spoke with local young people alongside city institutions.
Three decades of Romanian rap, from protest to trap
The station's playlist draws on a genre that took shape in Romania in the early 1990s, after the 1989 revolution loosened import rules and let foreign hip-hop tapes circulate through an underground tape-trading market. Vorbire Directă, formed in late 1992, is considered the country's first hip-hop group, and acts like B.U.G. Mafia and Paraziții built lasting followings rapping about the hardships of post-communist daily life, with B.U.G. Mafia going on to become the first Romanian rap group to tour abroad. The sound shifted again in 2015, when the group Șatra B.E.N.Z. popularized trap in Romania, and a younger generation of artists, including Lino Golden, Ian and Nane, carried that style to its current position as the genre's dominant sound.
