A genre named after one club

The genre this channel is built entirely around has an unusually specific birthplace. According to a history of Frankie Knuckles, the Warehouse club in Chicago hired Knuckles as resident DJ in 1977, where he mixed underground disco, obscure soul and European electronic records into a sound distinctly his own. Chicago record shops soon started fielding requests for "Warehouse music," a phrase that got shortened over time into the genre name the whole world now uses: house.

One genre among roughly forty on the same network

HOUSE sits inside RauteMusik, a network that first went live on April 20, 2003 with a single stream and grew within four years into one of Europe's biggest internet radio operations, founded in Cologne by brothers Yehya and Daoud El Omari alongside André Surmann. The network now runs around forty themed channels, splitting its total audience by genre rather than building one broad station, with peak simultaneous listenership reaching into the tens of thousands.

Keeping the Warehouse's spirit on a 24 hour loop

Where Knuckles built his sound set by set in one Chicago club through the late 1970s and early 1980s, this channel runs the genre's full modern range nonstop, from deep house to tech house and electro house, without a DJ ever needing to be physically present. It is the same basic promise the Warehouse made its dancers decades ago, just automated and streamed from Germany rather than played live off reel to reel tape in a South Side club.

A direct line from one club to a continent away

That a single DJ residency in a Chicago warehouse eventually produced a dedicated German internet radio channel says something about how far house music traveled past its own origin story. HOUSE by rautemusik is not trying to recreate 1977, it is simply proof that the genre Knuckles helped name has become permanent enough to need its own always-on home, four decades and one ocean away from where it started.
