FIP streams commercial-free, hand-curated music spanning jazz, world, electronic, chanson, and classical, and you can hear it live and free on Radio Shuffle from anywhere in the world.
Born as a Traffic Report With Personality
FIP first went on air on January 5, 1971, under the name France Inter Paris, the source of its acronym, created by Roland Dhordain, Jean Garetto, and Pierre Codou, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. It launched with a distinctive twist on a mundane format: Parisian traffic reports delivered by hosts in what became known as a sugary, almost seductive tone of voice, describing gridlock and road closures with humor and irony rather than the flat delivery typical of traffic radio.
Music First, Talk Almost Never
The core concept has barely changed in more than fifty years: commercial-free music interrupted only briefly for cultural announcements, with almost no other talk. Traffic updates, the format that gave the station its start, were finally dropped in 2008, and news bulletins followed in 2020, leaving FIP as close to a pure music stream as a terrestrial radio station gets, curated rather than automated.
44,000 Songs a Year, Mostly From Independent Labels
A small team of expert programmers hand-picks FIP's playlist, building smooth transitions across genres rather than sorting music into rigid blocks. The station plays roughly 16,000 different artists and 44,000 different songs each year, according to Wikipedia, with 85 percent of that music coming from independent labels rather than major-label rotation, a ratio almost no commercial station anywhere comes close to matching.
A Network That Grew, Then Shrank
FIP's Paris success spawned regional siblings in the 1970s and 80s, including FIB in Bordeaux, FIL in Lille and Lyon, FIM in Marseille, and FIC in Metz, each swapping out the final letter for its city. Radio France's 2000 restructuring, known as Plan Bleu, folded most of those smaller-market stations into the France Bleu network instead, consolidating FIP's identity back around its original Paris-born format.
Why Tune In
FIP offers something genuinely rare in radio: five decades of hand-curated, genre-spanning music with almost no talk to interrupt it, built by programmers rather than an algorithm or a rotation chart. For listeners who want discovery over familiarity, it remains one of the most distinctive music stations in Europe.
