A Format Built to Travel Beyond Paris
FIP's very first signal launched in Paris on January 5, 1971 at 5pm, created by radio-television head Roland Dhordain with producers Jean Garetto and Pierre Codou, originally broadcasting on 514 meters medium wave under the name France Inter Paris 514, according to a history of the station. The idea, music with almost no talk, interrupted only for brief cultural announcements, proved portable. The network expanded into other French cities, each taking a local version of the name with the "P" swapped out for its own initial, FIM for Marseille among them, carrying the same commercial-free format with city-specific news and traffic layered on top. Bordeaux became one of those local extensions, giving the city FIP's eclectic mix of jazz, rock, chanson, electronic and world music alongside information actually relevant to people driving its own streets.
A City Built on Water and Wine
Bordeaux earns its FIP signal a genuinely distinguished backdrop. Known as the Port of the Moon for the crescent shape its harbor traces along the Garonne, the city has been a working port since around 300 BC, expanding dramatically under Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II before becoming the world's second busiest port after London in the 17th century, trading wine alongside coffee, cocoa, sugar and cotton. UNESCO recognized the whole urban ensemble as a World Heritage site, citing more than two thousand years of exchange between cultures and Bordeaux's enduring status as the capital of a world-famous wine region. A late-1990s regeneration under mayor Alain Juppé replaced old warehouses with parks and the now-famous Miroir d'eau, a water mirror that has become one of the city's signature sights.
