Classic Hits Radio From Mexico's Overnight Oil City

Listen Now

Éxtasis Digital plays the kind of format that could work in almost any Latin American city: English and Spanish hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s, the classics that transcend language on both sides of the dial. What gives the station a real anchor is Poza Rica itself, a Veracruz city that did not grow gradually like most places but was built almost overnight by an oil discovery that turned a handful of workers' shacks into a booming, bilingual industrial town within twenty years.

A City Built by Oil, Almost Overnight

Poza Rica's population sat at around 200 oil workers in 1932. By the 1950s, following one of Mexico's largest oil discoveries, that number had exploded to roughly 50,000 residents, a growth curve most cities take generations to reach. The Free Municipality of Poza Rica de Hidalgo was not even formally created until 1951, meaning the city's official government is younger than many of the oil wells that built it.

From Foreign Oil Companies to PEMEX

That early boom ran through foreign-owned oil companies before Mexico's 1938 nationalization handed the fields to the newly created state company Petróleos Mexicanos, PEMEX. Engineer Jaime Merino, a PEMEX superintendent, spent much of the mid-20th century effectively building the modern city from the ground up, driving construction of schools, hospitals and roads for a population that had arrived faster than any civic infrastructure could keep up with.

A Frequency That Inherited Its Format From Across Town

The station's own history is comparatively recent. XHCOV started as an AM signal, XECOV-AM 790, concessioned to Radiorama's Radio Social subsidiary in 1994, and was authorized to move to FM in November 2010. The Éxtasis Digital branding itself did not arrive on 105.9 until February 2021, transplanted from XHPR-FM 102.7 after Radiorama sold that frequency to new ownership and shifted the classic hits format over to XHCOV instead.

A Bilingual Format for a City Built on Foreign Money

An oil boomtown that grew up around foreign companies and imported engineers was, almost by necessity, a bilingual place long before streaming radio existed. Éxtasis Digital's mix of English and Spanish hits from the 70s through the 90s fits a city whose identity was shaped by exactly that kind of cross-border industrial history, even if the format itself only landed on this particular frequency a few years ago.
