A Border-City Station Almost as Old as the City Itself

Listen Now

Fiesta Mexicana plays banda, grupera and norteño to a city whose entire reason for existing is the border sitting right outside the studio window. Nuevo Laredo did not grow up around this station, but the station and the modern city both trace back to roughly the same century-old moment, and the music it plays has always leaned into what makes a border town's identity different from anywhere else in Mexico.

A City Founded by People Who Refused to Become American

Nuevo Laredo exists because of a border decision nobody on the ground agreed to. When the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo handed the original town of Laredo to the United States, many of its residents crossed the Rio Grande rather than stay, founding Nuevo Laredo on the Mexican side in memory of the home they had just lost. The twin cities have been referred to as "Los Dos Laredos" ever since, two halves of one urban identity split by a river and an international line.

A Signal Nearly as Old as the Modern City's Trade Role

The station's own history runs almost exactly a century behind that founding moment. XHAS received its original broadcast concession as XEAS-AM on March 3, 1948, passing through a handful of local owners before becoming an AM-FM combo in 1994. Grupo Radiorama took over the concession in 2000, and the station surrendered its AM frequency entirely in December 2021, settling into its current life as 101.5 FM under the Fiesta Mexicana name.

Broadcasting Into the Busiest Truck Crossing in Latin America

Whatever Fiesta Mexicana plays now reaches a city defined almost entirely by movement across that same border. Los Dos Laredos handles more truck traffic than any other crossing between the United States and Mexico, with roughly 8,500 trucks passing through daily and more than two million crossings recorded in 2023 alone, nearly 40 percent of all truck traffic between the two countries. It is a logistics hub built on constant back-and-forth motion, which makes regional Mexican radio, a format rooted in place and identity, a deliberate anchor for a city that could otherwise feel like little more than a checkpoint.

Music That Reflects a City Living in Two Worlds

Norteño has deep roots in exactly this kind of border geography, and Nuevo Laredo's own music scene has always mixed that regional sound with whatever crosses the bridge from the American side, from pop to hip-hop influenced corridos. Fiesta Mexicana's steady diet of banda and grupera keeps one foot planted firmly in that regional tradition even as the city around it keeps absorbing whatever else comes through.
