A Chihuahua Station Older Than Its Own Format

Listen Now

La Bestia Grupera plays a genre that did not fully exist when its own frequency first went on the air. The station broadcasts grupera, one of Mexico's most enduring regional sounds, from a Chihuahua City signal whose paperwork traces back decades before that music had a name.

A Frequency That Predates Its Own Genre

XHRPC received its original broadcast concession in 1961 as an AM station, back when Chihuahua's dial was dominated by ranchera and the earliest rock en español imports. Ownership passed to the Uranga family's Red Nacional Radioemisora network in 1967, decades before the station would settle into the format it carries today. Grupo Radiorama eventually took over the concession, and the frequency now operates under Grupo Audiorama Comunicaciones, the company's regional arm in Chihuahua.

Grupera: A Genre Built From Other Genres

What the station plays now did not exist when its transmitter first switched on. Grupera emerged in the early 1970s out of the rock groups of the previous decade, gradually folding in ranchera melodies, norteño rhythm, cumbia, and bolero until it became its own recognizable sound. It peaked in popularity through the 1990s, especially in rural and working class communities, carried by bands like Los Bukis, Los Temerarios, and Bronco who turned a hybrid genre into a mainstream commercial force across Mexico and the Mexican diaspora in the United States.

A City Where That Blend Still Makes Sense

Chihuahua City sits in the kind of border-adjacent, ranching heavy region where grupera's mix of ingredients still lines up with daily life. It is cattle country and desert plains, close enough to the United States to absorb outside influence but rooted firmly in a ranchero identity, exactly the cultural overlap that produced the genre in the first place. A format built from ranchera, norteño, and cumbia fits a city that has always sat at that same crossing point.

News and Talk Alongside the Music

La Bestia Grupera does not run music around the clock. The station folds in news updates and talk programming between sets, a structure common among Audiorama's Chihuahua stations, which also include the romantic format Love FM on 90.1. That combination gives listeners a station built for the whole day rather than a single mood, music for the dance floor and information for everything in between.

A Regional Sound Still Finding New Rooms

Grupera's commercial peak may be decades behind it, but a genre built from this many overlapping traditions rarely disappears, it just keeps finding new speakers. A station broadcasting on a 1961 frequency, carrying a format that did not exist for another decade after that, is its own small proof that the sound still has somewhere to go.
