A French Youth Station That Nearly Didn't Survive
The NRJ name traces back to June 1981, when Jean-Paul Baudecroux launched Nouvelle Radio des Jeunes in France, a youth-focused station whose acronym doubled as a French homophone for "energy." According to the network's own history, French authorities repeatedly threatened to shut the station down in its early years, and it survived specifically because singer Dalida, who became NRJ's on-air "godmother," used her own connections to block a closure attempt in 1984.
From Paris to Sofia, Two Decades Later
That near-miss gave NRJ room to grow into one of Europe's biggest radio brands, eventually expanding internationally starting in 1988 and reaching Bulgaria on 17 November 2005. The Bulgarian version of the station is run under license by Communicorp rather than directly by the French NRJ Group, a common structure for NRJ's international expansion into more than 15 countries.
One Station in a Bigger Bulgarian Family
In Bulgaria, Energy operates alongside sister stations including Radio Nova, Radio 1 Rock and Auto Radio under the same media group, and it runs its own themed spin-off channels, Energy 00's Only and Energy 90's Only, for listeners who want a single decade rather than the main station's broader pop and dance mix.
