Wales' First Station for Anglesey and Gwynedd
The station launched on December 11, 1998 as Champion 103, becoming the first commercial radio station built to serve Anglesey and Gwynedd as a single region rather than splitting the area between separate local licenses. It began life under the Marcher Radio Group, broadcasting on 103.0 FM into North West Wales.
A Welsh-Language Station, Then a Network Relay
Ownership passed through GWR Group and The One Network between 2000 and 2009, then to Global Radio, which rebranded the station Heart Cymru in 2009 before switching it to the Capital network on May 6, 2014. For years the station kept a dedicated Welsh-language daytime show alongside its English programming, part of a bilingual identity built into the station since its earliest days. That changed on February 21, 2025, when Capital Cymru dropped its Welsh-language programming entirely, and the station now largely relays Capital North West and North Wales with its own localized news bulletins layered on top.
Part of a Wider Capital Welsh Story
Capital Cymru's North Wales roots run parallel to a separate Capital lineage in the south of the country. Capital South Wales began life as CBC, the Cardiff Broadcasting Company, in 1980, rebranded as Red Dragon Radio in 1985, and eventually became Capital FM in 2011 after Capital Radio Group bought it in 1999. Wales ended up with two distinct paths into the same modern network, one built around Cardiff and the other around Anglesey and Gwynedd.
