A National Network Reaching a City Built From Nothing
Jovem Pan's roots trace back to Rádio Panamericana, founded in São Paulo in 1942, with the Jovem Pan name itself adopted in 1965 under broadcasting executive Paulo Machado de Carvalho. The network built out its FM presence from 1976 and organized its affiliates nationwide through the Jovem Pan Sat satellite system launched in 1994, the same infrastructure that carries the signal to this Brasília affiliate, giving a station broadcasting from the country's seat of government a direct link to one of Brazil's oldest media brands.
A Capital Designed on Paper, Built in 41 Months
Brasília itself is an unusual host city for any broadcaster. Urban planner Lúcio Costa's winning Plano Piloto design, shaped like a cross or an airplane depending on who is describing it, turned an empty stretch of central Brazil into a functioning capital in roughly 41 months of continuous construction ahead of its 1960 inauguration, with architect Oscar Niemeyer designing nearly all of its major public buildings. UNESCO inscribed Brasília as a World Heritage Site in 1987, recognizing it as the first modern city to receive that status, protecting the Plano Piloto, the Monumental Axis, the Praça dos Três Poderes and the city's residential superquadras.
Pop Radio for a City of Government Workers
That blend of civil servants, diplomats and a growing resident population gives Brasília a radio audience unlike most Brazilian capitals, one built around a city that did not exist before 1960. Jovem Pan's chart-driven, youth-skewing format gives that population a straightforward pop alternative, carrying the network's signature irreverent tone, present since the 1993 radio debut of its Pânico program, into a city defined by careful planning rather than organic growth.
