Sweden has no shortage of retro-formatted radio, but Disco 54 commits to a single decade harder than most, running nothing but disco and its closest relatives from the 1970s and early 1980s, all day, every day.
Replacing the Oldies with the Dance Floor
Disco 54 launched on 26 April 2023 as a Viaplay-owned channel, and it did not arrive on empty airwaves. It took over the slot previously held by Gamla Favoriter on Viaplay's DAB+ network, a straight swap of a general oldies format for a genre-specific one, according to coverage of the launch. The station reaches listeners over DAB+ in Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö and Gävle, alongside the Ilikeradio app and website that carries it to anyone outside those broadcast areas.
A Slogan That Doubles as a Mission Statement
The station's tagline, "Musiken som får dig att dansa," or "the music that makes you dance," is not marketing filler so much as a genuine description of the entire playlist. Disco 54 draws from acts like Thelma Houston, Kool & The Gang, Sister Sledge and Michael Jackson, sticking almost entirely to tracks built for movement rather than background listening. It is part of the broader Viaplay Radio stable alongside stations like RIX FM, Bandit Rock and Star FM, but it is the only one in that lineup dedicated purely to disco.
Built for Every Listening Setup
Beyond FM and DAB+, the station streams through Viaplay's own platform with support for smart speakers including Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomePod, plus compatibility with internet radio hardware like Sonos. That reach matters for a format built on nostalgia, since disco fans skew toward listeners who want the music available wherever they happen to be, not just tied to a car radio during a commute.
Press Play
Disco never really needed reviving, it just needed a station willing to commit to it fully. Disco 54 does exactly that, and Radio Shuffle is a good place to hear it live.
