Built to Reach a Country With No Commercial Radio
The original Atlantic 252 launched on September 1, 1989, from a purpose-built transmitter in County Meath, Ireland, with studios twelve kilometers away in Trim. It existed because of a gap: at the time, there was no national commercial radio station anywhere in the UK, so Irish state broadcaster RTÉ partnered with Radio Luxembourg to use Ireland's allocated longwave frequency and aim a single, powerful 252 kHz signal squarely at British listeners as well as Irish ones. The £6 million setup, including a 1,000-foot mast, was built to reach an estimated 47 million potential listeners across both countries.
Gary King became the first voice on air, and the presenter lineup that followed drew heavily on former Laser 558 names, including Charlie Wolf, MaryEllen O'Brien, and Andrew Turner, broadcasters who had already built reputations on offshore radio before Atlantic 252 gave them a legal, land-based home.
Four Million Listeners, Then a Changing Market
At its peak in the mid-1990s, Atlantic 252 drew around four million listeners, a genuinely enormous audience for a single longwave signal. That dominance faded as FM commercial radio expanded across the UK with noticeably better audio quality, and after repositioning attempts failed to hold the audience, parent company RTL eventually exited the UK radio market altogether. The frequency briefly carried Team Talk 252 before returning to RTÉ, and the original Atlantic 252 signal went off air for good on January 2, 2002.
