Nearly a century on air, starting on AM
This signal's story starts almost a hundred years before its current hot AC format. It launched as AM station 5AD on 2 August 1930, owned by Advertiser Newspapers, broadcasting orchestral concerts, comedies, serials and sport in the format typical of early Australian radio, according to the station's documented history. Ownership changed hands repeatedly over the following decades, from Hoyts Media in 1987 after new rules barred newspapers from owning local broadcasters, to Montclair Investments in 1991. The station moved onto the 102.3 FM frequency via simulcast in 1993, a move regulators eventually forced the station to end, splitting the AM and FM signals into separate identities.
Mix 102.3, then KIIS 1023
Australian Radio Network bought the FM frequency in 2001 and rebranded it Mix 102.3, a name and adult contemporary format that held for nearly a quarter century and repeatedly topped Adelaide's ratings surveys. That changed in October 2025, when ARN announced the station would become KIIS 1023, part of a national shift toward the KIIS Network and a move to a Contemporary Hit Radio format aimed at listeners aged 25 to 54. The Mix 102.3 identity this station carried since 2001 formally gave way to the new branding in 2026, even as longtime listeners still know the frequency by its older name.
