Few stations take as long to reach the air as 89.9 The Light did. Its origins go back to 1977, when a group known as the interim committee, made up of Ray Taylor, Graham Cameron, David Freeman, Robert Freeman, Bill Foster, Eric McArdle, Len Miles, and Bob Stokes, began meeting to plan a Christian radio station for Melbourne, with the stated aim to "bring hope to a hopeless world," according to the station's own history page. The idea, first called Melbourne Christian Radio, drew enough public interest that 4,000 people signed a statement of support after it was unveiled at the Easter Belgrave Heights Convention.

What followed was more than two decades of incremental progress. The group ran its first test broadcast over three days at the People's Church in Reservoir in 1980, and later purchased airtime on commercial station 3DB while it worked toward a permanent license. It restructured as Triple Seven Communications Inc in 1990, appointing Bruce Upton as its first General Manager. The breakthrough came on 19 December 2001, when Triple Seven Communications was awarded one of two Melbourne-wide FM community licenses, on the frequency 89.9. Full-time permanent broadcasting began at midnight on Sunday, 1 December 2002, launching as 89.9 LightFM under the tagline "Good Friends, Great Music and a Message of Hope," twenty-five years after that first committee meeting.

89.9 The Light, Melbourne's Christian community radio station

From volunteer project to a million monthly listeners

Today the station, with call sign 3TSC, is run by Positive Media Inc and reaches more than a million listeners a month, a scale that would have been hard to imagine for the small committee praying over the idea in the late 1970s. The current lineup includes shows like Lucy & Kel for Breakfast, The Daily with Cam Want, and Shaylee & Rob for the Drive Home, alongside dedicated programming like Aus Music Showcase, giving airtime to Australian Christian artists specifically.

The station has also grown beyond a single frequency, now operating sister channels TheLight Mix and TheLight Worship alongside the flagship 89.9 signal. That expansion mirrors the same patient, incremental growth that defined the station's founding: a project built one small step at a time, from a three-day test broadcast in a suburban church to a modern multi-channel network still built around the same original mission.
