Πειραϊκή Εκκλησία, which translates to "Piraeus Church," is not a music station dressed up with a religious name. It is exactly what it says it is: the broadcasting arm of the Holy Metropolis of Piraeus, and it holds a genuinely rare distinction in Greek media, being the first ecclesiastical radio station the country ever had.

A Prototype Since 1988

According to the Holy Metropolis of Piraeus' own account of the station, Πειραϊκή Εκκλησία went on air on October 30, 1988, described at the time as a prototype undertaking, an experiment in whether a diocese could sustain its own broadcast outlet. By 2025 the station had reached 37 continuous years on air, a run that has made it a fixture of religious broadcasting in Greece rather than a novelty.

The station broadcasts on 91.2 FM in the Athens and Piraeus area, is relayed through repeaters across much of Greece, and reaches Europe and the Middle East via satellite, with peradio.com carrying the signal online to Greek communities in the diaspora. That reach, built up gradually over nearly four decades, has turned a single diocesan station into something closer to a national and international resource for Orthodox listeners.

More Than Liturgy

The programming goes well beyond broadcasting church services. Alongside liturgical content, the station runs shows covering theology, society, culture, and Greek tradition, including a Sunday program called "Ýdor ek Pétras," "Water from Stone," hosted at midday by the Metropolitan of Piraeus himself. The station is currently run by Archimandrite Augustine Theodoropoulos as general director, with a small dedicated team overseeing programming and production, and it is sustained in part through listener donations, reflecting its identity as a community-supported outlet rather than a commercial one.

A Rare Kind of Station on Radio Shuffle

Stations like Πειραϊκή Εκκλησία occupy a different space than most of what fills a typical radio dial. It exists to serve a specific spiritual and cultural community, offering continuity, tradition, and a sense of connection to Orthodox faith and Greek heritage for listeners at home and scattered across the diaspora. Its longevity, nearly four decades and counting, speaks to how deeply that role has been valued.
