104.6 RTL Das Beste der 80er streams nothing but 80s pop, rock and new wave, but the station it spun off from was itself a kind of import, built to sound like Los Angeles radio and launched in Berlin less than a year after German reunification.

Modeled Directly on a Los Angeles Station

104.6 RTL went on air on 9 September 1991, and its founders used Los Angeles station KIIS-FM as their direct template, copying the studio's construction as well as numerous program elements, according to a documented history of the station. That made 104.6 RTL the first German station to build itself around American-style format radio, importing a US programming model into a Berlin market that had, until reunification, never had a private commercial station operating this way.

On Air 11 Months After Reunification

The station's September 1991 launch came less than a year after German reunification was formalized in October 1990, putting 104.6 RTL among the first wave of private broadcasters to establish itself in a newly unified Berlin media market. Owned by RTL Audio Center Berlin GmbH, part of the RTL Group, the station targeted listeners aged 14 to 49 with a hot adult contemporary format aimed at a demographic largely too young to have followed West Berlin's older, state-run stations closely.

A Morning Show That Never Changed Hosts

104.6 RTL's best known program, the morning show "Arno und die Morningshow," has been hosted by Arno Müller since the station's very first broadcast in 1991, giving 104.6 RTL a rare case of on-air continuity spanning more than three decades under the same host. The station has also run "Stars for Free," a free annual open-air festival, since 1997, an event that turned the station's brand into something Berliners could show up to in person rather than just hear through a speaker.

A Themed Stream Built From the Parent Station's Own Era

Das Beste der 80er takes the decade 104.6 RTL itself launched at the tail end of and turns it into a dedicated channel, running pop, rock and new wave hits from the same years the parent station was finding its format. That makes it less an arbitrary nostalgia play than a station replaying the soundtrack of its own founding decade, packaged for listeners who want that specific era without the current hits mixed in.

104.6 RTL Das Beste der 80er is a spinoff stream, but its parent station was itself built by copying an American format into a city still adjusting to reunification, and more than three decades later that same station still runs the morning show it started with.
