A Station That Renamed Itself Almost Immediately
Antenne Niedersachsen began broadcasting in 1990, licensed by the Lower Saxony state media authority to serve Lower Saxony, Bremen and Hamburg. According to the station's own history, it changed its name to Antenne Das Radio almost immediately after launch to avoid confusion with the public broadcaster NDR 1 Niedersachsen, then rebranded again in 1996 as Hitradio Antenne during a wider relaunch. The station's ownership eventually consolidated under Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, with shareholders including the RTL Group, publishing house Madsack, and Studio Gong Niedersachsen. That places a regional Lower Saxony signal inside one of Germany's largest commercial broadcasting groups, the same company behind RTL Television, giving the 80er spinoff access to resources and reach a standalone regional station would not have on its own.
