80s80s Party is not a standalone station so much as one carefully chosen slice of a much bigger German operation. The parent brand, 80s80s, launched on June 17, 2015, out of Rostock, and has since grown into a network with more than 40 specialized streams, each built around a different corner of the decade.
From a Regional License to a National Brand
80s80s began life as a private broadcasting program under Antenne Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, produced with backing from the Regiocast group, according to a history of the network. In January 2021, it received its own independent media license from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's regulator, and by May of that year it had taken over UHF frequencies from Antenne MV to start broadcasting as a full nationwide program in its home state. Regional web streams for North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Hesse followed over the next several years, turning a regional side project into a genuinely national 80s brand.
Forty Ways Into the Same Decade
What sets 80s80s apart from a typical decade-format station is how finely it slices its own catalog. Rather than running one generalist 80s mix, the network offers dedicated channels for Neue Deutsche Welle, Depeche Mode, David Bowie, Prince and ballads, alongside genre-specific streams for new wave, pop, rock and disco, all pulled from the same self-declared "Real 80s Radio" archive. 80s80s Party is the entry built specifically for a night in, described on the network's own stream page as the channel for an "80er-Fete," leaning on dance and funk cuts engineered to keep a room moving rather than just playing in the background.
Ten Years and Still Splitting Further
The network marked its tenth anniversary with a dedicated podcast series retelling what it called "the incredible story of the first 10 years," a sign of how much the brand has leaned into its own history as part of its identity. That anniversary came the same year new regional streams kept launching, suggesting the network's strategy of narrowing further into micro-formats rather than consolidating is still very much active.
