Wow 101.1 FM has only carried that name since February 2021, but the frequency behind it has been broadcasting into Mexico's Comarca Lagunera since long before FM radio existed there at all. Getting to "Wow" took a concession granted under a different call sign, several decades of ownership changes, and a rebranding streak in 2020 that swapped the station's name twice in under six months.
Eighty Years Under Four Owners
The station's concession dates back to November 21, 1942, when it launched as XEDN-AM at 600 kHz under original owner José Bertiz, according to a documented ownership history of XHDN-FM. It passed through Radio Programas de México, then to Luis de la Rosa in 1958, who had previously served as the first president of the Mexican Association of Radio Stations, before Grupo ACIR took over in 1970 and Grupo Radiorama acquired it in 1982, the company that still holds the license today. The station didn't move to FM until 2011, migrating from AM 600 to 101.1 MHz and picking up its current call sign, XHDN-FM, in the process.
Three Names in Six Months
The most dramatic stretch of the station's history is also its most recent. GPS Media took over day-to-day operation in 2020 and rebranded the station as El Viejón, then switched it again to Éxtasis Digital that same August, before settling on Wow in February 2021 with an English classic hits format. Three identities inside roughly six months is an unusually fast churn even by commercial radio standards, and it suggests a station still actively searching for the format that would stick, landing eventually on English-language oldies, adult contemporary, and classic hits for a region that, unusually for interior Mexico, has a substantial audience for that catalog.
Broadcasting Into a Metro Area Split Between Two States
What Wow 101.1 actually covers is the Comarca Lagunera, a region straddling Coahuila and Durango that takes its name, "region of lagoons," from an area that was originally ranchland before irrigation turned it into a major cotton and dairy producing zone in the twentieth century. The Zona Metropolitana de La Laguna at its center, made up of Torreón in Coahuila and Gómez Palacio and Lerdo in Durango, functions as one integrated urban area of more than 1.4 million people despite sitting across a state line, making a single FM signal reaching listeners in two different states less an oddity and more the region's normal setup.
An Old Frequency, a New Identity
Wow 101.1's playlist has nothing to do with its 1942 origins as an AM concession, but the eight decades of ownership changes behind it are part of why the station exists on the dial at all. It's a station that spent most of its life under other names, formats, and owners before arriving, fairly recently, at the one it's using now.
