Wit FM Lounge sounds like a station built purely for relaxation, all ambient textures and soft rhythms drifting through the evening. Wit FM launched on June 1, 1988, founded by former RMC journalist Jean-Louis Marin, according to the retrospective published by Wit FM itself for France's Fête de la Radio. The station took over the abandoned frequency of the Parisian station Hit FM and deliberately picked a similar-sounding name, a way of holding on to listeners who might otherwise have tuned elsewhere, as noted by Wikipedia. Its earliest studios sat inside Stade Chaban-Delmas, meters from the Girondins de Bordeaux dressing room, which let the station break club news ahead of its competitors and quickly built its local credibility.
A Club President's Radio Station
That football connection ran deeper than proximity. Wit FM was soon acquired by Claude Bez, the president of Girondins de Bordeaux at the time, tying the station's fortunes directly to the club, per Wikipedia's summary of its ownership history. Sud Radio bought a majority stake the following year, folding Wit FM into a larger regional radio network while it kept its own identity and local sports coverage on air.
From One Signal to Eight Webradios
Wit FM's format shifted over the decades, moving toward a Top 40 sound by 2013 while keeping regular local news bulletins, and building a large weekly audience across Gironde by the end of the 2010s, according to the same Fête de la Radio retrospective. In June 2020 the station relocated to new, digitally equipped studios in Bègles and used the move to launch eight thematic webradios, spinning off dedicated channels for different decades and moods instead of squeezing everything into one signal. Wit FM Lounge is one of those spinoffs, built specifically for chill-out tunes, ambient textures and smooth melodies rather than the current-hits format carried by the flagship station.
A City With Room for Both
Bordeaux's own nightlife leans toward exactly this kind of range, with low-key venues like the botanical garden's Le Caillou offering relaxed live sets alongside the city's louder clubs and riverside boat venues.
